You can buy or build a wooden fireplace mantle using almost any type of wood.
Mount a 2X board on the brick by drilling holes in the mortar, installing lead anchors in the holes, and bolt (wood screw threads) the board to the brick.
Then build an elongated box on the board dressed up with decorative molding, and stain or paint to suit you.
You also can mount a solid beam by drilling holes in the mortar and matching holes in the beam, and use threaded rod or large dowels (with epoxy) to mount the beam to the bricks.
Check with your local Building Inspector for the minimum distance above the fireplace opening for wooden mantles.
Good Luck!
Mike
