I own a house built circa 1925. The foyer has beautiful natural oak molding around doors, baseboard, etc. A previous owner has painted over similar trimwork in other rooms of the house with glossy paint.

I would like to remove the paint down to the original wood finish. Is it possible to remove the paint and keep the original finish intact? What product should I use?

I do not know what product was originally used to finish the wood. By appearance, it has a flat finish and is quite a bit darker than freshly cut oak.

I realise this is not technically funiture, but the subject seems to fall in line with other discussions in this forum. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Removing the paint will remove the original finish as well, leaving you with the wood to refinish - sorry, but that's the way it is. Chances are the paint is oil based to boot, which will make it a little bit of a chore.

From your description of the wood that wasn't painted, it may have just been stained. Check to see how smooth it is or whether cleaning a section brightens the sheen any.

As far as creating the least mess, Peel Away 7 suggests itself. It's touted as removing multiple layers of paint down to the bare wood with one application. It ain't cheap, but if it's half as good as advertised, it's worth it.
