Re-doing the living room, and like many folks (at least if browsing past postings is any clue,) I've decided that the brick facing on the fireplace doesn't "go" with the planned decor.

I would like to cover the chimney with drywall but don't want to "bump out" the chimney any more than absolutely necessary. I'm planning on marble for the surround, and a classic type mantel (which I will manufacture myself, natch ;) .)

Given the flammable nature of the paper on the drywall, I suspect that attaching it directly to the brick using drywall/construction adhesive is right out. The alternative is furring strips. Would this be acceptable? I really don't want to bump it out even that extra 3/4" but ya do what ya gotta do.

Might want to consider cement board vice drywall. Normally used as backer in wet areas, i.e. base for tiling in baths.
Sometimes sold under tradenames, ie wonderboard. Also I believe it is 1/2" vice 3/4" to save some thickness.
