I have an old unfinished pine buffet with a hutch attached. I would like to whitewash it or pickle it in a white or sage green. Also its a little beat up and I would like to replace the hinges and knobs. Help! How do I go about all of this?

First things first. Take all the old hardware off. Clean the piece, inside and out, top to bottom. TSP is suggested. It's available at most paint stores and is an excellent cleaner for prepping apiece.

You may have to sand the doors/drawer fronts if the old hardware left impressions - you be the judge.

Replacing the hardware is just a matter of selecting what you like, at least in the pulls (drawer/door knobs). You'll need to be careful about replacing the hinges however. The size and placement of the hinges can be changed, but the TYPE (not style) of hinge can not easily be changed. Take a hinge with you when you go shopping - note how it fits the door. There are specific types of hinges for specific types of doors - you need to match type.

For your whitewased look, Minwax and several other companies make a semi-transparent stain that mimics the whitewash look very well- - and it's a lot easier and quicker than the traditional methods. Minwax in particular offers this look in a variety of colors.

PS - file this for future reference. Many people find the new hardware has screws that are either too long or too short for the application they have. Amaze your hardware clerk by walking in and asking for a #8 machine screw, preferably with a truss head xx inches long (xx being the length you need). They probably won't have the truss head, but a #8 machine screw is standard for cabinet hardware and they'll probably have what you can use.
