I have a SONY 32inch television that was bought in 1996.

About half a year ago I started to notice a blue spot on top right corner of the televesion which was visible in red or yellow backgrounds. Television was working fine no complaints. The television worked approx. 8 hours a day.

Yesterday the tv would not turn on at all. After 20 seconds of pluging the plug into the wall I heard a poping sound (like a popcorn pop) and I unplugged it.

The repair guy came in today told me it might be the power supply problem. He would get back too me in a few days. He took the mainboards to the shop with him.

The power supply is on the mainboard or is that the thing that's on the end of the TV tube?

Is it worth fixing or just getting a new one?

What would have caused this?

Is this possible that once it's fixed this can happen again in a year or so?

This television is pretty new I can't believe its dead.

Thanks.

Good Morning, pwtg:

Sony builds a decent set so I wouldn't be concerned about it happening again any time soon.

The blue spot could be caused by a magnetic source (such as a clock) sitting on top of the set. Magnetic fields have a tendency to make the color appear strange. You have a problem call "purity" misalignment or magnetism of the picture tube.

Either way, talk to the tech when he gets it up and running. If the spot is still there, it is a quick adjustment to realign the deflection yoke.
