Hello, I am planning to frame a porch roof to cover a deck. This will be attached to my house and have a very flat pitch, 1" per foot run. I am covering the roof with some kind of sheathing and a rubber like roof product called Poly-Glass. My questions are two:
1) should I use 2x4s for the frame, includeing ledger boards. I was planning to use 2x6 or 2x8 for the beams and then cut a slight birds mouth so the joists will lay flush on the beam. Will 2x4 joists be strong enough? Also, do I need to run a 2x4 perpendeiclar to the house as well as at the 1" pitch diagonal? In other words, when I am looking at the bottom of my roof covering, will the ceiling look flat or can it be angled for a more roomy feeling.
2) What kind of sheathing should I use for the underlayment? OSB or ply, and which thickness. I will be laying down a 43-lb underlayment (as opposed to 15-lb felt) and then the Poly glass rubber-like rolled roofing.
Thanks

First question back is: How deep is your deck?
A 2x4 can only span about 4 or 5 feet. Sometimes 6.
I fthis roof covers the entire 30' long deck and is 10' deep or more that will be a lot of weight. How many posts? 3 or 4? With the span between posts of 8' to 10' you need to use at least 2x8 doubled.
Sounds like 2x6 rafters and "maybe" 2x4 ceiling joists are in the works.
Rafters on 24" centers - 5/8" decking (OSB or plywood)
Rafters on 16" centers - 7/16" or 1/2" decking (OSB or plywood)
You arewise to come here for your information, but it sounds so far that you may be underbuilding to save money. It will cost you more later if you do.
