Hello,
I was curious how to butt up two beams to a posts, or if this is advisible. I have 4x4 posts and am using 2 2x8 beams, one on each side of the posts. When I have used all the length in a beam and need a new one, should I plan to butt up the two ends on the side of the 4x4 (each about half way in). Or should I place a new footing and beam close by and cantilever each beam a little. I have 30 feet to cover and have posts spaced 9 feet.

Also, I am planning on covering my deck with a framed roof. For this do I need to run the posts all the way from the footing up to the roof beam, or can I run the posts for the roof from the decking up to the roof beam. THanks very much.

I don't like spacing more than 8 feet between posts, but I have gone 10.

Go ahead and butt the joints and lag bolt them to the post.

Run the posts all the way up to your ceiling beam/header.
