Whoever caulked around our tub did a VERY messy job.
We want to replace it. Any hints for easy removal of the
old caulk? Any hints for re-caulking neater this time?

If they used silicone based caulk it should peel off in a strip.

A steady hand and a sharp finger are what makes the good caulker.
