George,

I have a tall entertainment/microwave cabinet. I am under a tight budget right now and need to try to salvage what I can into 'newer looking' pieces. This cabinet has a sticky, pretty much like contact paper, wood grain surface. I would like to paint the cabinet or do something with it so I can put in another room and get some more use out of it. I really dont' know if this is possible with this type of cheap furniture or if it can be stripped off and then painted. The cabinet is made of cheap pressed wood. I'm not sure if this can be painted, etc...I'd appreciate any thoughts you have as I need guidance on this one. Thanks for your time.

Sand the surface. You don't have to remove the paper finish, but you do need to rough it up completely. Prime - 2 coats, sanding after each has dried. Apply the paint of your choice.

Some of the paper finish will come off - don't worry about it. Just make certain the edges remaining are tight against the particle board and not loose.
