I have an old kitchen table i would like to refinish, actually I want to paint it.

Its an Ikea type table, melamine top, and varnished wood legs and chairs. The table top is staying as is, but the legs and the chairs will get painted (The seats of the chairs will be re-covered).

What is the best way to go, can i just scuff sand, prime and paint or do i have to go through the stripping process? As im sure you can appreciate, I'd preffer to avoid stripping if possible.

Also, what type of paint would you reccomend for this type of project.

Tks all

Sanding the present finish enough to dull the sheen will be adquate as far as prep goes. It is not necessary to strip the piece.

Use a good primer (I suggest either BIN or KILZ) 2 coats, sanding lightly after each.

Paint with your choice. I normally use exterior paints for doing furniture because of the added durability.
