View Full Version : Measuring for a wallpaper border

I live in Florida. Our house has an open floor plan with cathedral ceilings.
I'm putting wallpaper & a border on the bottom of the walls in the kitchen, dining area & hall. How high up from the baseboard or floor should the wallpaper/border be?
Also when measuring along the walls, X-amount of inches up from the floor or baseboard, do you measure all along & then get your line by more or less connecting the dots (measurement marks) or use a long level & make a level line?
I marked all along the wall, 36" up from the baseboard but the marks don't line up if I use a level. They drop down, in the hall, to about 35 1/2" as I go along. Then I come to a door and can start remeasuring again on the other side
Do I put the wallpaper up to the level line or to where I measured.
Please also, How far up the wall does the paper go? Keep in mind the high ceilings.
Thanks~~

It rather depends on how long your wall is.
1/2 " Is`nt too bad if you have a long wall.
Your floor must run down hill slightly and so if you hang your border level then any furniture that sits there will make your "levelled border" look crooked.
It also depends on the paper that you hang, as a straight patterned paper that is hanging plumb will show your border to be crooked. (not an issue with plain non patterned paper)
If you have no furniture along that wall then hang your border to align with your pattern approx 3 ft (bottom edge) from the floor. if you are using non patterned then use the method I suggest below.
I usualy take a measurement at each corner from the floor and snap in a chalk line from those measurments.

Im not sure what you mean about "how high up" and I would have to see a picture of your room to make a considered judgement.

Thanks so much for your reply. You answered my question "how high up" with, the bottom of the wallpaper border being 36" from the floor. I meant how many inches up from the floor should the bottom of the border be.
The room I asked about was the hall. Redoing my measurements there's only 1/4" difference from one end of the hall to the other. The wallpaper is also in the kitchen & dining area. No furniture against any of the walls. It does have a pattern that has to line up. Small birdhouses scattered all over. I wouldn't think 1/4" would be noticable. But I will use your suggestion
I was measuring up the wall from the top of the molding that's along the bottom of the wall. The molding is almost 4" high. The wallpaper would go up 36" & then the 7" border. That would make the top of the border almost 47" from the floor. Is that to high?
Thanks again!
