Just a follow-up that might help others. During a recent remodel, I bought a new toilet. The old one had been recycled from an old home, had been cleaned up and all parts replaced excepting the porcelain. This time it looked cracked or scratched so it thought buying a new one would be the best. I made a post here after the new toilet failed to flush properly and was informed about the new low flush rate toilets. This new toilet,an Am. Std. Plebe, had a ferocious vortex when the handle was pulled, but did not handle solid wastes hardly at all. I was told to get a toilet auger and a good plunger, keep them handy at all times, and live with it or find an old toilet that I could rebuild again. This has a good outcome. I decided after talking with a few others who were having only mild problems with their commodes to investigate my toilet further. Upon shopping I noticed that manufacturers stay arounf 2" clearance in the passageway, but some mention a fully glazed passageway as a feature. I brought my toilet back to where I bought it, bought one with a glazed passageway, and reinstalled. A major pain in the neck, yes, but I now have a Kohler that flushes. It does not roar like the Plebe, but quietly (and successfully) does the job. I check for blockage, etc. and the seal was perfect on the first one, so I know it was not the installation. I believe the glazed passage makes all the difference and the additional $20 was worth it. Wish I had known the first time. Thanks for such a helpful forum, curlie.
