How do I clean a window unit a/c? (Sorry--I don't know the make & model #.) Dust/feathers/gnats get in it and irritate my mom's allergies. Is it ok to hose the a/c out? Someone told me that, but it seems wrong to put water in an electric appliance.
Thanks

or if smaller unit remove complete a/c unit.If it does not have a sleeve remove all screws to remove outer casing.Use good duct tape to seal all switches on front of unit.Use plastic to cover fan motor and duct tape plastic into place.Spray evap coil and condensor coil with garden hose, let water drain for a couple minutes.Next spray oven cleaner on evap coil and condensor coil.Let it set for 20 minutes and then rinse it clean. It will be necessary to do the same with the evap blower wheel.Keep in mind that the air flow on condensor may be from blade thru back of unit, instead of thru condensor towards compressor. If fan motor has oil ports remove caps after cleaning and place 10 drops of oil into opening, install caps back into position. The same process can be accomplished by taking window shaker to a car wash.Use the regular wash with soap cycle and a good rinsing afterwards. It is best to blow out all components with compressed air afterwords.Let unit sit for 24 hours to dry.PDF
