I am rebuilding my 15 year old p.t. deck and would like to gain a little more square footage. The posts(6X6 p.t on 5' centers) are new and will not be replaced. The posts are 10' from the ledger at the house.

What is the maximum cantilever. I will be using 2X10 on 18' centers.

I have read in books that you can do 30% of the length of the joist as a cantilever; however, I have never seen anyone on this board recommend more than 2 feet.

Your help is appreciated, thank you

Here in MD, code is a maximum 3 feet with 2x10 joists, or 2 feet with 2x8. The inspector didn't mention anything about percentage of span length, just a limit per lumber size.
