Hi, I am having trouble with my heat pump freezing up. It is made by Goodman Manufacturing corp, model CPE 30-1AB high efficiency electric heat pump. The unit is almost 6 years old. We have been in this house less than a year so we are not sure of the units history. We had a repair person look at the unit last August for the same problem. He added maximun amount of antifreeze to help stop the freezing up of unit. That did not work. So he suggested we change the thermostst. So we did. The weather became milder and the problem disappeared. Now it is back. The outside pipe on the unit actually gets a thick coat of ice and frost on it and the the unit stops blowing cold air. It blows some air , warm to room temperature. The repairperson told use the unit had a fairly new compressor. ( not the original that came with the unit ) . Any thoughts! I have a medical condition which requires me to be in 60 - 65 degree temperatures. I really depend on A/C in North Carolina for 6 or more months out of the year. Do we need a new one? I need help.

Thank you Keyami

A leak was checked for. And no leak was found. Extra freon was added to see if it would make a difference. We replace the air filter every month. We keep the outside unit free of debris. Thanks keyami

Hi,
This could be due to Blower/Fan not working properly,Filter dirty/undersized,Evaporator Coil dirty, ductwork torn/loose/kinked,etc... Unit could have had a leak still undetected also and if not could now be overcharged.

I would suggest you contact local BBB or local Heat Pump Association for Qualified/Reputable Contractor to service/inspect your unit.

Heat Pumps are a little more delicate than a normal A/C unit and require a technician with Heat Pump knowledge to service them. This unit may be the "victim" of improper installation and/or improper service/repair techniques by unqualified technicians/contractors.Hope this helps.Take Care and Best Wishes.

you need to have a heat pump specialist check your unit. you may have them check yor vents for proper air flow too. The may not bee the right size for your familly. Sometimes when
a new family move into a house it totaly changes the heat load on a house and the ac will no longer properly cool. Als make sure the people you call to service your unit are qualified technicians. You may have to spend more money initially, but they will get the problem fixed. If you keep calling people who offer free or discount service calls you
will probably get people who are not well trained.

Go on and spend the extra bucks and get the problem fixed,
or you will end up spendinding mor money in the lon run.
