I am remodeling a basement room that has a painted brick
fireplace. I don't think I want to put the work into removing all the layers of paint.
Any suggestions on what would be the next layer of color? There is no mantle and that will be built in a simple design (using oak).

The color depends if you want the fireplace to stand out as a focal point and contrast with the walls or to blend in. I just moved into a house with white walls, white fireplace bricks, white mantle. I opted for a color on the bricks to accentuate the fireplace.
