I have an occassional chair that the bottom of the leg has extensive damage. It appears as if it may have sat in water for an extended time. The chair leg is made of mahogany and the location of the damaged area is worn almost an 1/8" off. The chair wobbles. The grain of the wood is split. The damaged area is the very extreme bottom of the leg, where the leg sits on the floor. There is evidence that at one time there was a small repair performed before. Do I repair by sanding the damaged area smooth and then applying wood filler?

Valejo:

Using a wood filler is cosmetic repair, and you'll need to do that, but let's address the split first.

You need to work a thin knife into the split and open it up enough to get glue into, then clamp and let dry. Any glue that oozes out can be scraped off after it dries completely.

If one leg is shorter than the others from this damage, you either need to build up the short leg with wood, not wood putty, or cut the other legs down.
