Hello i am getting ready to move into a house that has a gas fireplace. We would like to know if we could burn a wood log in the fireplace and leave the gas shut off. The gas prices are going up and is it possible (and safe) to burn a duraflame log or something instead of using gas, thanks.

According to NFPA-211 (National Fire Protection Agency's Standard for Chimneys) a Level 2 inspection is required when you change the type of use of the fireplace and chimney or their is a transfer of the ownership of property. This is a national standard and may not be adopted as code in your area like it isn't in mine. However, it's the only thing I use in evaluating my customers chimneys because it is the most thorough.
I'd suggest you have a Certified Chimney Sweep inspect the system before using it. Be sure to request a "Level 2" inspection. You can find a sweep in your area at:
