I have an electric heating and AC unit. I noticed it would
not cool the house down the other day when I turned the AC on for the first time of the season. Then when the weather turned cool again and I tried to turn on my heater, it blew out moderatedly warm air, running constantly, but not warming up the house. When you turn the thermostat down to the temp in the house, it cuts off, but does not cut back on when the temp in the house drops. Is this my thermostat? Thought at first I needed more freon, but now with the heater messing up, wondered if I needed a new thermostat. Ist there any way to check it this is the problem???

chances are u have a low voltage thermostat what you do is pull the cover off your furnace and find where the thermostat wires come in they will be pretty small wires they should go to a terminal board that is labled with letters like R W Y C G take a pair of needle nose and touch one jaw to r and one to W or take a piece of wire and jump it from r and w and see if that helps but it sounds to me there is a different problem i would lay money its not the stat

Thank you. If it is not that, what do you think it is? I was trying to avoid paying a heating/cooling guy $150 just to drive out to my house, you know? If there is any way to fix it, I would love to. But if one did come out, would he be able to install our digital therostat? My husband and I tried to do it ourselves, but it didn't work.

I just replaced mine with a honeywell 3300. This thermostat was factory set to F for gas furnace. Check the back of your thermostat if it was set to E since you have an electric heating and AC unit.
