the children where writing on paper with permanent markers and it went thru the paper on to wood coffee table is the any way to remove marker with out hurting the finish

It might hurt the finish, but I have used small alcohol wipes from my first aid kit to remove the same from cloth or wood.

Joelle's approach may work - but there is defintely a chance of hurting the finish more than it already is. Here's what I'd try first.
Make a paste of baking soda and water - rub teh affted areas with this using a damp sponge. This will dull the surface, but should remove the marks. You can restore and even sheen to the top by going over the entire top with a fine automotive abrasive compound such as Turtle Wax polishing Compound and Scratch Remover.
