In an effort to reduce noise from my return air filter grill, I cut a second opening on an adjacent wall and installed an indentical 24x24 filter grill. It's a little bit quieter but it's not the dramatic reduction that I had hoped for. The unit is a vertical upflow system installed in a closet in the hall with the original return air intake situated directly below it at floor level. The condensing unit is a 4 ton capacity.

I've heard some discussion of some type of baffle that can be installed in the return air plenum that will reduce the noise. Is this type of thing effective? If so, can anyone point me to a site that gives details of how to build one?

A rattle,a whistle,the sound of air flow thru duct?If second opening does not connect to unit it will not solve problem.Is filter clean?PDF

PDF - The evaporator/fan/heater assembly sits in my hall closet with the return air chanber just below it at floor level. The noise is basically what I would call the sound of air rushing through the filters at a relatively high velocity. The return air chanber is a rectangular box about 2.5 ft (high) x 3.5 feet deep x 3feet wide.

I've checked both air filters and they are clean (new ones installed)
