Question of curiosity. I have seen some farely substantial runs from outside heat pump/condenser units to the house. Why are these not required to be installed in conduit for safety?

What are you talking about...electrical? copper? Air ducts? Type of system?

Sorry for being so general but where I come from the bundle of power and refrigerant lines to the outside coil unit of a typical heat pump is very obvious and is very vulnerable to damage.

Oh, the copper tubing and low voltage wire are the charge lines. There is no code nationwide that requires the charge lines to be in some type of conduit. Secured and off the ground, in some states yes. But most only address the issue with new construction.
If you,by chance have a high voltage wire(220v) taped to and run with the charge lines, that is illegal in all states.
