We have a brick fireplace with a mantle. I have two very young children & am scared to death they'll hurt themselves on the brick step at the bottom. - We never use the fireplace & it would be nice to have some usable space. can I cover it over with something & build maybe a bench over the brick step? has anyone ever done this?

You can frame and sheetrock over fireplaces, and you can even build a bench seat over the hearth.
However, if you ever plan to sell the house, a fireplace is a plus.
To protect the little ones from falling onto the hearth, why not just fold and drape a thick quilt or blanket that matches your decor over the edge of the bricks?
Good Luck!
