I have a large foyer with a hardwood floor. The walls are covered with very rough, grass-cloth type wall paper. I'm looking for advice concerning the best way of removing this type of paper without damaging the wood floor with water. I ordered a product called Wallwik (an absorbent fabric material designed to hold the water at the surface of the paper) but I haven't tried it yet. Any advice on Wallwik and other methods of removal will be appreciated - Thanks - Jerry

Jerry, I also have had trouble removing grasscloth...however, by trial and error I finally came up with what worked best for me. I bought DEP, a wallpaper remover...Got a garden sprayer filled with hot water and the DEP..Taped plastic drop cloths to the baseboards and placed old towels at the bottom of the walls to be stripped. I started spraying at the top and worked my way down the wall on one strip at a time... then went to the next strip and sprayed it...then went back to the first strip and it just peeled right off... Such a snap to do... a little laundry to do but it sure beats renting a steamer. I was careful to make sure I saturated the paper evenly..Honestly the paper peeled off in WHOLE sheets. Grasscloth really soaks up the liquid so just be sure and spray over it enough to make each strip is really wet{It doesn't have to be dripping down the walls!!} Vinegar will do basicly the same thing in hot water and would be alot cheaper...Also if your planning to paint afterwards... it's easier to wash down the walls with a vinegar and water solution while they are still damp. Any paste left behind will probably cause your paint to crack and chip off. OH,... I didn't actually have a recipe for the vinegar solution, but, I would guess I probably used a small bottle of vinegar to a gallon of water.. Perhaps someone else out there would know a good recipe for that... I just know it stinks more than the DEP. HomeDepot should have it...Good Luck..Vickij
