When referring to decks, what is a cantilever ?

It's when your joists are supported a foot or two back from the end by a beam underneath. In my case the deck will be 12' out from the house. The joists will attach to the house via a ledger board and be supported at 10' out by posts with a doubled 2x10. Then the joists will simply rest on top of the beam and hang out the other 2', unsupported.
