I am in the procees of remodeling an old house. After pulling up the kitchen floor i have found a felt or tar paper of some sort on top of the wood floor.Could anyone please tell me the best way to remove this?I tried an adhesive remover but it leaves some on the surface. Does this matter or will it be sanded off anyway? Thanks for any help.

Tanko,
What you found is roofing felt(tar paper) used as a vapor barrier. Normally, it should peel right up. How far down are you going. Under the felt is probably your plywood subfloor. You will probably want to recover the subfloor with another vapor barrier, either felt, or possibly a thick plastic sheet. It will depend on your final choice of floor material. I think removal of the existing felt is optional, not sandable.

The floor I am stripping is a hardwood floor I would like to refinish. It has been covered for at least about 30 years. I have scraped a few boards with small scrapers, anything too wide wants to cut into the wood.Using the adhesive stripper the most of it comes off, but the tar remaining seems to seep into the wood.Using a small sander it comes off,but I a afraid of cutting too much of the wood.I dont mind scraping but I have so many other things to do in the house I hate to waste the time if there is an easier way. Thanks.
