I've cleaned the fireplace of the house we bought a couple of months ago, and find the floor of the firebox to be poured concrete. I was under the impression that the entire firebox was supposed to be made of firebrick. The house was built in 1955. Was this common building practice for the time? Will I experience any problems from this?

Thanks folks!

Hello
Years ago they did use concrete for fire places but it has its problems....it takes a long time to dry out and not have trapped mosture under the surface...But if this has been used for almost 50 years and is still in good shape I would have to think it is Ok to use....If you have the room you could lay a 3/4" fire brick bottom and you would realy have a safer unit....Good Luck

Professionally speaking as a Certified Chimney Sweep, I'd say it depepnds on how thick the floor is and what is under it. If it is sitting on a properly built foundation there shouldn't be a problem.

Here's some web sites that might help. The first one will provide you with a list of Certified Chimney Sweeps in your area.
