I am currently preparing my floorboards. I plan to out 3 coats of dark stain on them. do you recommend I put extra sealant in addition to the varnish? someone told me that this is necessary to avoid uneven wearing of the floor. We want a satin finish

I'm a bit confused on the 3 coats of stain. Normally, stain has little sealing effect and additional coats are mainly for darkening the tone. If the wood is by chance pine, you may want to apply a pre-stain conditioner first. Pine has a tendancy to stain very blotchy. After your stain has reached the desired shade, two or 3 coats of a quality polyurethane should finalize the finish. The poly is a sealer.

thanks...the "ronseal" woodstain claims to stain and seal the wood floor... I wanted to know if that was really the case.

There are combos, stains with poly included, but a straight stain will have very little sealing or protection qualities.
