So is what I am hearing that you can't use an
existing patio to support a deck? I have read
several other threads and the suggestion seems to
be to remove the concrete. This really isn't an
option.

SITUATION:
I have a smallish patio next to the house, with
a larger area beyond which is currently pea gravel.
I want to build a single level deck over both the
patio and the pea gravel. The deck is to be a single
level at house floor height. This makes it 12" above
the patio. The pea gravel is slightly lower, and can
be removed if necessary (or at least dug out for
posts and maybe beams).

CURRENT THINKING:
I plan to use 2x4 redwood for the surface and PT doug
fir for the framing. The joists would be either 2x8
or 2x10. That's either 9" or 11" of height so far
(right?). The other 1" or 3" would be something akin
to posts, but would sit on the patio (suggestions,
especially for material which won't rot? Something
other than wood?). The joists would extend over the
edge of the patio to a standard beam/post configuration
over the pea gravel.

QUESTIONS:
Is this feasable? I really don't want to remove the
patio, as was suggested in other threads.

What material would be good to rest the joists on
above the patio? I was thinking of steele brackets
shot into the concrete with the joists through bolted
to them.

I hate posts (or, at least digging them). Is it
possible to increase the span of the beam (and
decrease the verticle relief) by using a steel beam?
Where can I get span/spacing and sizing information
for steel beams? I'm already dealing with them in
my basement (1 wall at lease will run along under a
beam), so I'm interested in how they might apply to
this job. Of course, the beam would have be suitable
for outdoor use.

Thanks!

You cannot support the deck with the patio slab. If I understand you correctly, you should be able to bolt a ledger directly to your house. You would use this ledger as the beam for your joists on the house side. Then you would need to pour footers to support the other end of the deck.

Now is you want a free standing deck, then you must bust up the patio and dig and pour footers.
