Our house built in 1979 has stipled ceilings in all of the rooms. I think I would like to have a smooth ceiling as I think this trend is popular today and I like the look as well. How could I do this? Many thanks to a bright do-it-yourselfer!!

You have your work cut out for you, I have done a few of these in my time, we scrape them down, then take Durabond 90, use this as a basecoat, smooth the whole ceiling out, then take topping compound and smooth this over the durabond let it dry intil it turns white, now you can sand it smooth, after take and prime and paint.
Good luck
