I want to paint my steel doors. I plan on using Rustoloeum
oil based paint. What is the best roller to use?
I don't have a paint sprayer and used a roller some time ago with great success. Last year a tried the same method and the surface was covered with fuzz from the roller. Thanks in advance. Anita

There is a trick to rolling doors and making them look right, I normaly like to spray or brush them but if there is a lot of them and a sprayer is out then brushing them all would take some time, so I sometimes use a roller but I always brush them out. You will need a low pile roller, like 1/8, wash it in water thoroughly, put on the handle and roll down an exterior wall rapidly to sling out excess water and allow to dry, wrap around entirely with masking tape and pull it off to remove more excess fibers, this will help, there are also low pile foam rollers (black) that work well but since they will leave tiny bubbles, it needs to be brushed out also.
Cover everthing good, floor, cabinets, etc so you can work fast, use a 5 gallon bucket and a bucket screen, cut in the paint up against the hinge pins(if on that side of door) cut in top and bottom of door so you don't hit the drop cloth or roll up on top of the door resulting in runs. Roll it quikly and evenly, pick up brush (already dipped and paint wiped off on side of can) Start on one end at the bottom and take a stroke all the way up to and off the top, go to the bottom and do the same thing all the way across the door (bottom up, bottom up) slightly overlapping strokes. Watch for runs at the top of the door, work fairly quikly.

If you do this right it will turn out great, thin the paint slightly, it does take a bit of practice though or it may end up looking worse than just rolling it and leaving it which will dry leaving just a slight orange peel effect.

If you don't feel up to the brushing out of the door then by all meens skip it, but the method I mentioned above will help to remove a lot of loose fibers in the roller.

Hope this helps.
