We have an older home - built in the 40's. It has accumulated a blackish layer over the outside red brick - I am assuming from dirt, pollution, and other time related stains. What can I use to safely clean it?

Other cleaners can be purchased at a masonry yard.
An old formula:
1 part vinegar
1 part ammonia (strong fumes)
1 part borax
Remember: always wet masonry before applying any cleaner and always do a test patch.
