I live in Central Texas. Hot in the summer but not below 10 degrees in winter.
I have a concrete Driveway about 16ft wide and about 40ft long. The contractor installed an plywood expansion joint about 3/4 of the way from the house to the street. The plywood strip has broken and is coming out of its slot.
My question is should I remove this and if i do what should I replage it with? If I don't replace it with something, then weeds will grow up in it and it will look unsightly.
I was thinking of filling it with some 1/2" or 3/4" foam backer rod. Would that work or should I use some asphault type caulking?

Remove the old then backer rod topped with 5/8" of polyurethane caulk or Deck-O-Seal. Select a size of rod that will slightly compress or use multiple strands of smaller diameter, but do not pack tightly.
Deck-O-Seal (swimming pool supply) is two component; more expensive, but it's pourable and has other advatages also. Mask either side with masking tape, mix, pour, remove tape.
