I have a two part situation:
I'm a new homeowner, and I would like to know how to clean the bricks around the fireplace with household cleaners if possible. Will bleach or Clorox harm the bricks?
After cleaning the bricks, what can I put on the bricks to
give a gloss (not to glossy a mere sheen) appearance? Is polyurethane acceptable?

Rutland makes an excellent product for cleaning bricks called "Fireplace Glass & Hearth Cleaner". You can normally find it at your local hardware store or fireplace retailer.
I personally wouldn't recommend applying anything to the bricks for a gloss appearance, especially if you plan to use it. Also think about the next home owner. I'm not 100% sure about this, maybe someone else has better advice on this.
