Hello,
I'd like to get my fireplace cleaned in the next few weeks. I've called some of my local chimney cleaning companies and most want to charge $49 and they'll handle 3 things for me:
Wirebrush down the chimney
Vacuum the fireplace
20-point safety inspection
Is there anything else that I need to worry about with a fireplace for maintenance?
Thanks.

Sounds like a bargain to me. It's $65 here.
Is the inspection by video camera after cleaning?
Cleaning the chimney of creosote buildup is the primary fireplace safety maintenance item.
If you burn many fires at all, the chimney should be cleaned and inspected annually.
You can pre-check it yourself by looking up it with a flashlight. If you can't see the color of the flue liner, then you probably need to have it cleaned.
Good Luck!
Mike

Thanks for the reply.
I didn't ask if they do a video inspection...do you recommend this as well?

If your dealing with CSIA Certified chimney sweep be sure to request a Level 2 Inspection. This will include a video scan of the interior and checking clearnace to combustibles.
This will cost more, but from the price you stated it sounds like your getting a good deal. Just remember, you get what you pay for. My area $100+ is not uncommon.
