The black finish on the interior of our direct vent gas fireplace is cracked and peeling off. There is now about a 4 X 6 patch of bare metal. The kicker is that this is a new unit in a new home - about 2 months old. We have not made any adjustments to the unit (firebox, logs, etc). The only thing we have done is reduce the gas level on the day we closed on the house. We have discontinued use of the fireplace, and have sent a service request to the builder.
We have not had a great experience with our builder, so would like a bit of outside input on this. What could be causing this? Is the fireplace safe to use in this condition?

Peeling paint won't hurt anything. I like to use Krylon brand high-heat flat black paint. It seems to match most manufacturers fireplace paint exactly. I would simply respray the interior and give it a day to dry/cure before you use the fireplace. Now is a good time to paint it since it is starting to get warmer and fireplace season is probably over.

Hello
This being a new house you should have a booklet on the fireplace from you builder in it you will find the 800 number to call for a service rep to come and inspect the unit to see why a new unit is doing this...to me is sound like it is getting way to hot...Need to Know WHY....
Good Luck....
