After getting numerous quotes from $5000 to $8000 for a 30x12 area and a small retaining wall of about 10 foot in length and 3 foot in height, I have decided to try this myself...
1. I guess my question is how much soil do I take away initially
2. Do I get someone in with a tractor to take away most of the soil then dig away the rest with a flat shovel
3. What grade should I make coming away from the house...1"
4. after all that what is the first thing I do put up the border or lay the rock dust down
5. what are the layers that I need to put down before I do the pavers
6. what is best to throw over the pavers
7. last are there any special tools I need or handy hints you could give me that would assist me in doing this...
Okay I am not Bob Vila but I am not an idiot either so I can do this but I would like some direction..PLEASE
Help

Maybe you're not Bob Vila, but you are senible, so let's do this the easy way. Jump to http://www.paverdepot.com/ Look for "How easy is Installation", then click on "online planning guide". At the bottom of that page download the PDF file "Download Construction Checklist now". Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view PDF files (easily found for free downloading).
The instructions show the use of a screed board to level the sand. An optional way is with two pieces of 1 1/2" pvc pipe as as guides. If you happen to live where frost heaving is likely you may want to add a 4" layer of crushed stone under the sand bed. A Bobcat [limited access tractor] (rented or hired out) will expedite the grading.
