I have just framed my fireplace with pine stained in early american stain. I would like to know if it is possible to paint the brick a brighter colour. If so, would you tell me the product to use that will give me the best longlasting results and how to properly prepare to brick. Thank you!

Very possible. Instead of paint consider masonry stain. mikemerrit (a paint forum moderator) recommends H&C by Sherwin Williams. (I trust his recommendations). Sherwin Williams H&C is sold as "concrete stain", but it's masonry stain non-the-less. Clean with TSP, then follow the directions on the container.
