I have a 50 yr old house tha has original hardwood floors throughout. I want to lay ceramic tiles in the kitchen but i am limited on funds. The floors seem very sturdy, My question is do I have to use a cement backer board ? what will happen if I dont? I don't want to raise the floor elevation anymore than I have to. If i must use the backer board , what is the min. thickness board I can get away with?
Thanks

Darren,
Instead of the backer you might want to give Ditra by Schluter Systems a try. Will raise your subfloor by 1/8 in.
