there was carpet in the area where I am planning to tile, I removed the carpet, and found, plywood/particle board underneath. What is the best type of preparation to use under the tile, in a bathroom?

"Plywood/partical board"? It's got to be one or the other. Plywood is better, but either way you should use cement backer board, a water-proofer (spread on), and then the tile. Hardi-backer is a good one, and it's readily available.
