If you use alabaster or soapstone for cabinet tops, how should it be sealed? I saw soapstone recommended on an episode of THIS OLD HOUSE where Julia Child designed the kitchen. We have native soapstone in my state and I want to use that for kitchen cabinet tops.

Hi Ragtop,

I have heard people touting soapstone, and I have seen it installed. I would not use it, period. You can seal it to death, but it is so soft it will still absorb everything that contacts it. That, and you can virtually scratch it away with your fingernails.

Choose a stone or tile that will provide you with a surface that can be used.
