I want to install ceramic tile in my entryway. The existing
floor covering is hardwood. Can I install backerboard over
the hardwood or should the hardwood be removed.

Hi Barbie,
You should have no problems with backer board over the hardwood. I usually have someone else walk around in the area I'm tiling and nail or screw any piece's of hardwood that show any movement at all first. Then install the backer board as per the manufacturers directions. If you can get away with using 1/2" board by all means use it. Also Hardibacker is a lot stiffer than many of the cementious backer units and I would recommend using it if it is available close to where you live. (Probably is)

cement backerboard seems to be unavailable where i live, the
local hardware store suggested using wonderboard. have you
heard of this product. With this wonderboard or backerboard,
does it have to be put down with mortar or can it be screwed
down. The hardwood flooring has a urethane coating and i
am not sure how the mortar will adhere to it. any suggestions.

Hi Barbie,
Wonderboard is cement backer board and, yes, you can use it over hardwood flooring. You should use polymer/latex modified thinset underneath the wonderboard. Do not worry about the urethane finish on the hardwood. Then screw it down every 4" around the edges and about 6" - 8" in the middle. Then tape the joints with fiberglass tape and thinset and you should be ready to install tile on the wonderboard. (All of the directions for wonderboard are on the yellow tape that is adhered to the surface on every sheet) Also I would install the wonderboard with the 5 foot edge at a 90 degree angle to the joints in the hardwood.
Good luck and follow the manufacturer's directions for installation to the letter (don't cut corners)
