View Full Version : Gaps between rock and firescreen?

I want to attach a glass firescreen to my natural rock fireplace, but since the rock is not perfectly flat, there are gaps. I have not yet attached the firescreen.

1. How (and with what) should I fill in the gaps?
2. The instructions for attaching the firescreen won't work. Parts to the firescreen are included to attach to the lintel bar, but the parts are at best a foot away from the lintel bar, which is completely encased in rock. Screwing the firescreen into the rock itself seems possible, but due to the heavy rock, and temperature variations, I'm not sure how confident I can be that it will hold. What kinds of options should I consider?

Thanks!

Hi,last June I put a natural stone surround on my fireplace with the intention of also putting up glass doors. I have the same problem as you with the gaps and I decided against the glass doors and put I think it`s called a Boston screen( a one piece screen that`s curved at the top) at the opening. It adds depth to the fireplace and looks good. The only other option is if you really want the glass doors, is to custom order ones that are mortered into the opening of the stone fireplace leaving no gaps. I was going to do it till I saw the prices, almost 1,000 or more YIKES. the screen works good enough for me. Hope this helped,Tom

Hello
Sure you can hang the glass doors on the fire place.
You will need to have a small roto-hammer drill to drill the rock and install and anchor into on each four corners or there about...find the stone that stickes out the most in the area that you are to hang the doors and use it to set all the other anchors to, you will need to shim out so the doors will be plum and strait side to side...Now you will need to get some fire place caulk and rope to fill in the gaps then the coulking on the outside to cover the rope
paint if you need to to look good...and dont forget the top it should be sealed real good so it will not want let out the smoke and make sure you have outside air so the fire will burn...some times the vents under the doors is not enough.....Good Luck
