I have an old home with paneling on the walls. I was wondering if it is possible to paint/wallpaper over the paneling, due to the fact that my budget does not allow for new walls. If so, which would be the most efficient?

i hae the same problem. i want to paint, i think it
would look great. i have heard that you have to clean
the walls very good to get all the dirt and grime off.
i was wondering if anyone has tried this.

I bought a house 4 years ago with paneling throughout the house. I painted them all and they look great! You have to either sand them first or use a product called Paso. Paso is a "liquid sandpaper". They also make off brands at any hardware store. Use a primer tinted to the color you want to paint. Use a brush for the cracks and then roller the whole thing. It will take 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of paint unless the paneling is relly thick with deep grain, that will take more. Get an "eggshell" tint paint and use a semigloss for the trim for ease of clean-up. You won't be disappointed! I have seen paneled walls wallpapered also, but I was happier with the paint, you can use any color.
Good Luck

Yes!! You can definitely paint paneling -- and *should*! :) Paint is cheaper than wallpaper...and with all of the nifty tools out there, you can have a variety of finishes. In fact, they now make *textured* paint (available at home improvement stores), so if you like the look of wallpaper, this is a good way to go.
We just painted the paneling in the basement. I washed the walls really well with TSP (tri-sodium phosphate -- available at hardware stores, etc.), primed them with KILZ primer (essential -- don't skip this step) and then just painted them the color I wanted.
Have fun with it!!
