In the summer of 2000 I bought 8 china hollies, 6 girls and 2 boys. We live in Michigan. In mid-fall I noticed one of the boys got this black color(in patches)on the stems and shortly after that it started to die. Our pH is very slt. basic, so I gave it a treatment to lower the pH.(aluminum sulfate?). The area is well drained and part shade. We water regularly, expecially transplants. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of what this "black" stuff is and can I get rid of it. This is new to me. Thanks, Mike.
