I live in zone 5 on a penninsula (on a lake) my raised 70 foot long flower bed is right next to the water. We experiance some very gusty winds so plants that are too tall or weak snap. The garden is shaded durring the afternoon. I have been filling it with perranials over the past three years. I try to fill in with annuals but they don't do well. I need some help with choosing both annuals and perrenials that will thrive in my garden.

I live in the southeast, and my small front yard has 2 large
oak trees in it. I have asked what perennials to plant in it. I was told to use hostas and ferns. They are suppose to be shade tolerant.
