We are putting new kitchen cabinets in on one side of our kitchen. The other side was done about 6 years ago in Red Oak. We built the cabinets out of Ash veneer, thought it was the same. Now we are trying to stain the cabinets. We used the same stain as was used on the other side but it is totally different. This is a very thin veneer and if we sand I think we will go through the veneer. We used Minwax one step but we need to get it a more orange color. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Donetta

Donetta:

What you're looking for is called a 'toner'. Specifically, it's an aerosol lacquer with color added - it's translucent, not opaque. Standard toners come in green, orange, and blue, and are available at the site listed below,

As well as many other furniture refinishing supply houses.

A little about colors:

The primary colors are red, blue, and yellow. Draw a triangle with these colors at the points. Between red and yellow, we have orange; between yellow and blue, we have green; between blue and red we have burgundy. The colors at the points of the triangle are Primary; the ones between these colors are secondary. Shades and tones are created by adding black or white, respectively.

Colors that are opposite each other in this diagram neutralize each other. Theoretically, the proper mix of orange and blue will produce black - more often it's a brown. The same is true for any of the other opposite pairs.

Understanding this color layout may help you in selecting another stain to add to the cabinets right over what you've already applied, or you may wind up just using the toner I mentioned at first.
