Hi: Arch

First thing is to be sure the machine is on level ground.
Then insert an oil drain pan under the engine.
Remove the oil drain plug. Then the oil filter.

Once all the oil is drained out, reinstall the drain plug.
Then install the filter. Be sure to rub some oil on the gasket first. Install the filter but do not overtighten it. About a 1/4" more of a turn after the filter is tightened on fully by hand.

Then pour in some fresh oil. Continue adding freash oil until it reaches the full mark on the oils dip stick. Write down or remember the amount of oil needed to reach the full mark on the dip stick. This will make the next change less of an add and ckeck, add and check routine.

check the oil often until you can gauge how much is used by the engine after each useage. Keep it topped up but do not overfill the crackcase.

Almost any major oil brand will do. A 10/30 or straight 30W oil should be fine. Warming the engine prior helps to drain the oil better but it isn't necessary.

Be sure to use the correct size wrench. I suggest a socket be used on the oil plug to prevent damaging the head.

Happy trails to you. Ride safe!

Would also suggest contacting Polaris and buying the service/parts/owner's manual for it. It will come in handy and give you some tips and service procedures. This will keep the machine running a long time with minimal effort.

I always like to have all literature on all my stuff, cars, appliances, etc. It also makes ordering parts a snap when you have the part number of the item you want right there.

Good luck!

Don't know how long he owned it,but didn't your friend ever change oil in it???? Don't know about a 250 but a friend has a 500 about that age and his has an external oil tank just behind the left front wheel and this is where the oil is drained and refilled.
