I moved into a house with unglazed terra cotta tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms. The former owner sealed them with butchers wax. This has to be redone frequently and we want a more permanent solution. Would we have to strip the wax somehow first? How? What product could we use to seal?

Hi Heather,

Amonia will cut the wax. You'll have to do it two or three times to get it all, rinsing with clear water in between. Watch out for the fumes. Amonia can open your nose. Very caustic. Wear rubber gloves and protect your eyes, too.

When the tiles are clean, let them dry a few days and then use a penetrating sealer. You can let it go at that, or you can add a top finish. Aqua-mix makes good products which are readily available at tile supply stores.
