I'm finishing up a built-in cabinet made mostly of pine, and it will need a bit of filling here and there. I have heard that the best way to make this invisible is to use some of the sawdust from the wood you're filling, but I am not sure what to mix it with. I was told once to use carpenter's glue, but I found the result didn't match very well. Is there something better?

If you are going to paint the wood i would use the glue and sawdust, or just wood filler.
If I was to stain it. I would first stain the wood and then mix the stain with the wood filler and then fill the areas in.
Typically the only time I use glue and saw dust is for cracks, thin ones like around crown molding on the wall or ceiling, it makes a great filler for this.
